Enjoy a variety of drop-in dance classes as part of our Open Division. Our classes are a great way to experience MCB School with no long-term commitment. Check out our schedule below – we have something for everyone.

Classes are open to all levels from beginner to advance and are a great way to try dance for the first time or continue your intermediate/advanced training while engaging in a fun and rewarding dance environment. We look forward to welcoming you to experience the love of dance with Miami City Ballet School.

Pre-registration for class is highly recommended. Class registration is first-come-first-serve. Once classes reach capacity, registration is closed. Classes and Faculty are subject to change.

Note: Registration in the portal closes 30 minutes prior to class. All class registrations are final and are non-refundable due to a missed class for any reason and/or late arrivals. Changes to open class registrations are only accepted up to 1 hour prior to the class start time. To request changes, email school@miamicityballet.org.

Miami City Ballet School’s artistic faculty is composed of renowned teachers who have trained and worked with some of the greatest teachers, choreographers and directors in dance history.

Claudia Lezcano Anel

Claudia began her training at the age of 7 in the Cuban National School of Ballet where she studied for 5 years. After leaving her country Claudia continued her training with The Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami School, and her education at New World School of the Arts where she was also introduced to the world of Contemporary and Modern techniques. She graduated with Highest Honors in 2014 achieving a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a Major in Dance. Shortly after, Claudia joined the Florida Grand Ballet, and The Sarasota Ballet for 2 Seasons. In 2017 she returned to Miami to join Dimensions Dance Theater of Miami where she danced for 5 seasons and performed as guest Artist for NOLA Ballet, St. Lucie Ballet, Charleston Ballet, Ballet Vero Beach among others. Claudia is also very passionate about teaching, and she sustains her teaching career alongside with her dancing. She is currently a freelance artist and faculty member at New World School of the Arts and Miami City Ballet.

 

Fabian Morales

Fabian Morales started his training at the age 10 in the Cuban National School of Ballet where he nourished his passion for ballet. He continued his studies and joined the Cuban National Ballet at 18 years old, touring with the company to several countries in Europe and Latin America, and also performing in important Ballet Festivals. In 2009 he joined the National Dance Company in Mexico where he was a soloist for 6 years, and in 2015 he moved to USA to join Dimensions Dance Theater of Miami. He danced with Dimensions for 5 seasons, performing in several venues like The Joyce Theater, Jacobs Pillow, Miami International Ballet Festival, Ballet International Competition, and as a guest artist with New Orleans Ballet, Texas Ballet, Vero Beach Ballet, among others. Currently Fabian is free lancing and teaching which is one of his main passions.

 

Herman Payne

Herman Payne Juilliard graduate in Ballet, Herman Payne has appeared in a number of theatrical productions. A few of such include: the Aspen Ballet Company; the Second National tour and the International tours of Ann Reinking’s Tony Award winning show “Fosse”, choreographed and directed by Debra McWaters; the International tour of West Side Story, under the Direction of Joey McKneely; 9 to 5 on Broadway, choreographed by Tony Award winning Andy Blankenbuehler; The New York City Center Encore’s productions of The Wiz, choreographed by Tony Award winning, Andy Blankenbuehler; House of Flowers choreographed by Tony award winning Kathleen Marshall; Pajama Game, choreographed By Tony Award winning JOHN CARRAFA; THE ID of BOB, directed by HINTON BATTLE; and the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, choreographed by LINDA HABERMAN, where Herman worked for 14 years (2000 – 2013).

In addition to Herman’s copious theatrical work on Broadway, internationally and with the Rockettes, he has spent many hours working in a completely different language of dance. He has performed in; Michael Jackson’s 30th Anniversary Special; with Mariah Carey, Usher, Mya, Destiny’s Child, Whitney Houston, Deborah Cox, Thalia, Tony Moran, Lisa Lisa, Kevin Aviance, Love INC., and Camp LO, among others.

Herman has choreographed various industrials, and corporate events and has worked for a number of summer intensives, such as The Broadway Theatre Project, where he is now the CoArtistic Director with Debra McWaters, the Miami City Ballet, the Springfield Ballet, Performance Edge 1 and 2, The Theatre Arts and Minds, and The New World School of the Arts. Industrials Herman has choreographed and directed include such events as: LANA MARKS; Herbal Life; and The International Hustle and Salsa Competition Corporation.

Herman’s extensive and formal education in dance, other than Juilliard, is rounded out by his studies at; Interlochen School of the Arts, The Pacific Northwest Ballet, The Houston Ballet, Alvin Ailey, The Boston Ballet, and Jacobs Pillow. He is an ARTS winner, (Recognition and Talent Search which is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts), where he won the 2nd award level in Modern Dance and an Honorable Mention In Jazz Dance. He also received a 4 year partial scholarship to attend The Julliard School where he received his Bachelors in Fine Arts.

Ultimately, Herman’s Dance studies have made him far more than proficient In Ballet, Modern, Jazz, a Theatrical Approach to all types of Dance and Hip Hop / Jazz Funk . His work experience has made him one of the most popular choreographers and instructors in today’s dance world.

He is a Adjunct Professor at the New World School of the Arts, University of Florida and Miami-Dade Colleges, and a Resident Faculty member at the world-renowned Miami City Ballet school.

Studio Policies

  • We kindly ask that you wait outside until your designated arrival time as the doors will open 15 minutes prior to class.
  • When you enter, please check in at the front desk.
  • Only registered students taking a Drop-In Class may enter the building. No friends, family, or children of a student may enter the building and/or watch class from within the studio or hallway. All guests need to remain outside.
  • No video recording or photography is allowed during class. Photos may be taken with the instructor or friends after class.
  • Proper attire is required. Examples of proper attire can be read on the FAQ tab. Students who do not wear proper dance attire may be asked to leave.
  • Students’ safety is our top priority and those who arrive late risk getting injured due to lack of proper warm-up. Therefore, students who arrive more than 15 minutes late will not be allowed to take class.
  • If a student is a disturbance to class, they may be requested to leave at the sole discretion of the instructor or other MCBS staff. Refunds are not guaranteed.
  • No gum, food, or drink other than water is allowed inside the studio.

Frequently-Asked Questions

Do I have to pre-register online for a drop-in class or can I just show up and pay?

  • We strongly recommend that you sign up for a class online prior to arriving. If you prefer, you can register and pay for a Drop-In Class in the lobby via our onsite iPads. You must arrive at least 15 minutes in advance.

I want to sign up for a class. What do I do?

  1. Create a new account or login to your current account.
  2. The “Class Schedule” page will appear with a list of all open classes and workshops available for registration. Class registration is only available seven days before the class date.
    • “Drop-In” in gray letters in the “REG” column indicates a class open for registration.
    • Don’t see “Drop-In”? Be sure to buy online class credits first. “BUY CLASS CREDIT” links are at the top of the page or you can click on “Buy Class Credits” from the navigation panel on the left side of the page.
  3. Once you have purchased class credits, click the word “Drop-In” to register. A message will appear notifying you that your registration is final and nonrefundable. Please read this message carefully and then click “OK”.
  4. A green checkmark in the “REG” column shows the class(es) you are signed up to attend. This will stay GREEN. You can also see your registered classes by going to the “MCBS for Adults” tab, then “My Account”.
  5. You will receive an email from “MCBS No Reply” with the subject line “Class Reservation Confirmation” that confirms your purchase.
  6. We look forward to seeing you in class!

What do I have to do when I get there?

  • Students who pre-registered online can check in at the desk in the front lobby, or you can sign up and pay in person.
  • Changing rooms are available.

What do I wear?

  • For most classes, fitted workout clothes are perfectly fine for men and women if you do not already own dancewear (like leotards and tights).
  • Long hair should be pulled back and secured to the head.
  • Ballet students should wear ballet slippers or jazz shoes, but first-time students may wear socks.
  • Dance clothing and footwear can be purchased at local dance stores such as Dancing Supplies Depot, Dance Plus, Dancing Doll Dancewear, or online at Discount Dance Supply.

Where are the classes?

  • All classes are held at Miami City Ballet studios at 2200 Liberty Avenue in Miami Beach, across from the Bass Museum.

I can no longer attend class; can I receive a class credit or refund?

  • All class and program registrations are final.
  • Changes to your Open Class registrations will only be considered up to one hour prior to the start of the class.
  • To request changes, email school@miamicityballet.org

How long is my Class Card good for?

  • 5-class sessions and 10-class sessions are valid for 12 months after purchase.
  • Any classes unused after the expiration date will be forfeited. No exceptions.

What if I am late?

  • Students’ safety is our top priority and those who arrive late risk getting injured due to lack of proper warm-up. Therefore, students who arrive more than 15 minutes late will not be allowed to take class.
  • Students who have pre-registered and paid online prior to arriving late will receive a class credit for a future class.

Where do I park?

  • Metered parking and garages are available throughout the neighborhood (between 17th & 23rd Streets, Collins Ave. & Dade Blvd). Parking can be challenging at certain times, so we recommend that you give yourself plenty of time to find parking and arrive on time.
  • Metered street parking around MCB building, Library, and Collins Park
  • Metered parking lots next to MCB building, Library, Bass Museum, and the W Hotel across Collins Ave.
  • Residential street parking is available for free on Monday-Friday, 7am-6pm (NO weekends or holidays or after 6pm!) around the neighborhood – be sure to check the street signs to determine what is residential and what is public!
  • Parking garages (pay to park): Miami Parking garage (334 23rd St.) Pennsylvania Avenue Garage (1661 Pennsylvania Ave); City Hall Garage (1755 Meridian Ave); 17th Street Garage (640 17th Street — main entrance is on 17th Street across from Convention Center Drive).

Can I video record or take photos during class?

  • No video recording or photography is allowed during class.
  • Photos may be taken with the instructor or friends after class.
    • Make sure to tag @MiamiCityBalletSchool in your posts!

Can I bring a drink or snack into the studio?

  • No gum, food, or drink other than water is allowed inside the studio.

Can my family, friend, or child watch me take class?

  • Only registered participants taking a Drop-In Class may enter the building.

Participant behavior
