Miami City Ballet will hold auditions in Naples and West Palm Beach for kids ages 8 and up with previous ballet training to perform in its annual production of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker® at Artis-Naples and the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts.

The second season of “Strictly Ballet,” an online documentary by Teen Vogue, is focusing on the hurdles of young apprentices at the Miami City Ballet School. Among those students are many Latin Americans, recruited at an early age from their home countries and hopeful to meet their American dreams of becoming ballet dancers in the US.
Teen Vogue produced a new documentary “Strictly Ballet 2” offering an inside look at the lives of teen dancers.
The show follows six ballet dancers from Cuba, Brazil, Russia and Clearwater, Florida at the Miami City Ballet School.
“I always thought a ballet class was the most democratic place in the world because you walk in and you are judged not by your race or gender or social economic position,” Lourdes Lopez, artistic director Miami City Ballet. “You are judged by your talent and your judged by your effort that you put in.”
Season two of the Teen Vogue’s web series documents what it takes to make it into Miami City Ballet
Miami City Ballet has definitely taken center stage this year. Most recently, Teen Vogue sheds the spotlight on the prestigious Miami Beach-based company for its web video series, Strictly Ballet, which follows six students and apprentices as they try to join Miami City Ballet as professional ballet dancers.
Last year, Teen Vogue‘s “Strictly Ballet” infiltrated the elite world of NYC’s School of American Ballet. We got to meet a few of its most promising students, including Mimi Staker, who’s now a corps member of New York City Ballet, and Jasmine Perry, now an L.A. Ballet corps member. It was a fascinating account of life at SAB—what the training is like and the pressure that comes with being a student at one of the most prestigious schools in the country.
MIAMI BEACH, FL – (March 18, 2015) – Miami City Ballet, in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the office of the Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho, announces the launch of Ballet Bus, a year-round dance scholarship program reaching deep into the Miami-Dade County community to provide arts education and access to students from all backgrounds. The pilot year of the program will target 17 children from District Title I Schools with both talent and need – and provide a long-term investment in each child.
Miami City Ballet’s Open Barre dance series returns to its intimate studio theater in South Beach on March 13 and 14 with a rarely-seen glimpse into the lifetime of training, discipline and artistry practiced by aspiring professional ballet dancers.
Open Barre: Practice Makes Perfect; The Evolution of a Dancer will feature performances from the MCB School Ensemble, including excerpts from Harald Lander’s Études, a one-act ballet that begins with traditional ballet exercises at the barre and ends with spectacular displays by advanced students,and will close with George Balanchine’s colorful and exuberant Western Symphony.
Miami City Ballet’s next generation of dancers will be featured in the company’s Open Barre studio performance series, with the troupe’s new MCB School Ensemble performing.
The show, entitled Practice Makes Perfect: The Evolution of a Dancer, will feature the ensemble performing George Balanchine’s exuberant cowboy and dancehall girl romp Western Symphony, as well as excerpts from Harald Lander’s Études, which evokes the life of a young dancer from exercises to accomplished solos. The evening also includes a talk with MCB School director Darleen Callaghan and faculty member Maria Torija. MCB principal dancer Jennifer Carlynn Kronenberg will sign copies of her book So, You Want to be a Ballet Dancer?
